Most people start online poker with Texas Hold’em. This article talks about a few aspects of that game variant.

Basic thing is to know what starting hands to play in what positions. First position is left of the big blind. Starting from that you should raise with AQ up to 22, leaving QQ, TT and same with second and third position. In fourth, fifth and sixth position you should raise with AK to AJ and KQ, including all pairs. In positions after that you can raise with AK-A2, K9 or better, any two pictures including JT. Also with all pairs. Keep in mind that if someone raises before you it is not very smart to call with mediocre cards.

If anyone re-raises you when you are in the middle positions  and you have QQ-AA then you should definitely re-raise, with other premium hands you should call . You should play the previously written hands in that way if there are more then eight players playing  . If the table is full (10 players) then the game is tighter, raises are more ordinary and less people look at the flop . Picture cards value will rise  , drawing hands and made pairs lose their value. If the game is very easy then you can play a lot of drawing hands already from the first position, like JT suited or 54 suited.

In No-Limit you should test your opponents strength when you are in one of the last position by limping with all suited drawing cards and maybe cards like 97 suited, hands which have a card missing between them (opposite to 9-8 i.e.). It is hard for your opponent to analyse you because they will not guess your hand that easily  . These hands can be very profitable against tight players who have raised in early position  , if they have an overpair and you have flopped a set in a late position then you will most likely get their whole stack . It is not very good to do this oftenly and definitely not when you would be the only person against the raiser  . These kind of hands become profitable when the hand has three or more players involved .

Beginners make a lot of mistakes before starting poker  but one of the most common ones is that they do not look for explanations about rakeback  . Once you have read about it then it would be best to look for 888 Poker Rakeback or Noxwin Rakeback as they provide the fishiest tables and very good rakeback. Most players greatly over-fixate on winning pots. If they put a nickle into a pot, you darn near need a crowbar to pry them away from pouring millions in to chase that nickel. Proper PLO 8 play is directly counter to this, which is why most players are not suited for the game. You should easily fold most of the hands you play. PLO8 is mostly a game of homeruns. Big pots. Big edges. Big betting. You aren’t looking to hit many PLO8 doubles. You don’t want to mix it up in a lot of pots. You want to get out early, or be gladly shoving all your chips in by the end. The only way you want to hit singles in PLO8 is by making bets on the flop that nobody calls. This can occur two ways. The first is obvious, you bet a hand that should be bet and nobody calls. You can’t put a gun to people’s heads and make them call, so just take the pot and wait for the next time. The other small pot/singles to look for are “orphan” pots — pots nobody seems to want. These are pots you can make one bet at, and then you are done. If you win the pot, great, if you get called you back off and very seldom move to try to win the pot. A simple example, the flops is QsJs9s. You have Ad2d5hKs. You have two opponents. The first opponent checks. You bet. You should win this pot right here more than half the time. If you get called or raised, you just give up. You are bluffing these pots, but you are bluffing when your opponents have very little. Their very little just happens to beat your very little.

If you are looking to start with Pot Limit Omaha Hi Lo then remember that this game requires you to play many hands meaning that you pay a lot of rake. You should look to sign up with a poker room through an affiliate offering best rakeback. This ensures you the best possible profit as rakeback maximizes your winnings.

This is a quite tricky  move, but it will work against experiencedpoker players as they have the ability and the nerve to throw away decent hands  . Attempting this against weaker players might be bad because they will call you too oftenly so you can’t have profitability with this move. I saw one poker player at Noxwin online poker room who called all-in bets on the flop with AK without anything on the flop matching his cards  . He caught an ace on the turn in one hand and in other hands he won without improving! Only because the opposition tried to force him out of the pot with a draw or something similar.

For example, bluffing in order to „advertise“ yourself has no point against the weaker players because they “just don’t get it“! If you haven’t played a hand for a longer period and you push all-in pre-flop with AA and they have like JJ then they will never fold because they never notice that you haven’t played a hand for an hour or so . There is no point to throw money around trying to build a loose image with weak players at the table, it works against good players.

Just wait for the bigger hands and put your money in if you are sure that you’re the favourite . Weak players will most likely make a mistake and call your all-in when they are far behind.

Lets say you have joined a poker room with Rakeback, like Noxwin Rakeback, and you are playing at $3/$6 no limit holdem. Weak player raises to $20 pre-flop , you have pocket kings and re-raise to $60. Everyone folds besides the weak player . You presume you  have the weaker player beat as they would most definitely move all-in pre-flop with KK or AA. Here you already have earned decently with Rakeback.

Flop comes 2-6-6 and he checks. It would be smart  move all-in right there or at least make a very big bet. If they are holding  AK they will call a average bet on the flop even if they should not. Go all-in and make sure they get the point  . Even weak players are smart enough to fold AK if the flop is 2-6-6 and they have to put in everything they have at the table  . If they call then you will be a big favourite (you survive the turn and river 76% of hands). Do not ever bet small with your overpair – even with pocket aces. It’s best to move all-in and if they are so keen on calling you, they will anyway. Whether you bet $110 or $200 on the flop.

Make sure you get Rakeback when you join with an online poker room as it will help you ease the pain of losing to weaker players who „suck out“ on the turn or the river. That way you can easily say: „Hey, at least i’m getting Rakeback and my loss isn’t that big“.

You need to be very aggressive in Omaha if you have the best poker hand  . You will most likely have to call someones bet if you are on a draw to see another card  . Tactical moves like bluffing or slowplay are quite useless in the smaller limits.

Bluffing only works when you are up against couple opponents and the pot is small which doesn’t happen very often in Omaha. Every player has six „poker hands“ preflop so they will most likely hit something .

In Holdem it is easy to bluff if you get to see the flop while being on the blind  and when the flop consists of three small cards which make a pair, like 2-2-9. Since there are no draws and only five cards out there which have a piece of this flop and mostly people do not play them, it is very likely that anyone has anything. Being on the blind is a very good opportunity to bluff with a small pot and a similar baord  . The blinds can have anything, why not even 9-2?

In a tight Omaha game bluffs also work. Maybe the best chance to do that is if the board has a flush like  Jc-6c-Kc and you have Ac. It is very likely that someone has the flush but since you have the ace it is possible to make others lay down their flush .

Mathematically it is the same situation with 9c-2c-Tc board and the opponent has Kc. Poker is a very psychological game. Some players need to see opponents cards when they have Kc, that could make them want to „check out“ their opponents cards. It is much easier to hold back your curiosity with a Jc.

If you have the nut flush in Holdem then slowplaying might be good if the board looks safe  . The board is always dangerous in Omaha  ! On the river there are 12 cards which could bring a pair to the board and give someone a full house. In Holdem one player gets a pair every second hand but in Omaha three or four players have at least one pair in their pocket cards.

This goes for small stakes Omaha only as mentioned before  . As the limit grows, Omaha changes its personality . Games get tighter, raises become more usual and tactical draws are more important. Mathematical poker turns into psychological and you need to focus on reading your opponent.

When you are starting with Omaha you should first look for rakeback. Look for Noxwin Rakeback or 888 Poker Rakeback as they are the best places where to start with Omaha. Lots of beginner players which makes it easier for you after you have read a bit of Omaha poker strategy!

In case blind bets (antes) are used, then each player must post this token amount of money in order to receive cards. If blinds are employed, one or two players are required to post a bet or portion of a bet before the hand is dealt. This requirement rotates around the table.

Each time a round of cards is dealt, players have an opportunity to check, bet, fold, call or raise. There are different rules for each specific version of poker, but basically poker is simple.

Poker objective is to win money. not to win pots! This is important to understand, because by playing every hand until the bitter end – you can win every pot you possibly could. There’s no need to play every hand. But when you enter a pot – do everything possible to maximize the amount to win.

So, one of the secrets of poker is – anyone can win in the short run, but in the long run the better players win more money with good hands and lose less with weak hands.

Now let’s talk about Texas Hold’em strategical issues.

You need to know what the best possible hand is and count from it. For example, to have four-of-a-kind or a full house, a pair must reside among the community cards. Or there is no flush without at least three common cards of the same suit.

These combinations help a lot to be ready for all possible situations and choose the most affordable.

With the communal cards Q-J-T-8-A – it is very likely that one of opponents made a straight, but with K-6-5-3-A on board the chances for it are weaker, because in the first example anyone with a nine or a king would have a straight, and in the second – a straight requires a four and a deuce, or a four and a seven.

Moreover, most players are not going to stick around with hands like that as hands like 7-4 or 4-2 are very weak starting hands. At the same moment nines and kings are right up to stay and not fold. This is the example of gamers’ psychology.

When you are holding the nuts – the best possible hand – your job and tactics is to get as much money as you can into the pot by betting and raising at every opportunity. This is when you are squeezing the most from the lady luck. Professional players will do everything to raise as much as possible from this chance.

Also do not forget that Texas hold em is a positional game, as the betting order is fixed for each round. This means that when you act last before the flop, you are getting a serious advantage of deciding what to do after all of your opponents have acted.

In front of one of the players is a button with a "D" on it – this is the dealer button. The dealer button moves one position to the left before each game round. In the poker room (which you will be able to download at the bottom of the post) there is a virtual dealer who does the dealing. The virtual dealer is not participating in the game – just deals the cards.

Texas Holdem Poker – Game Round

Important note – the examples provided are for the limit poker

Blinds: Two players directly to the left of the dealer button (not the virtual dealer!) must post "blinds" – in other words they have to place a bet before getting cards. As the dealer button moves on every game round, everyone has to post blinds at some point in the game. The player to the immediate left of the dealer button posts the "small blind" which is equal to half of the minimum stake. The player to the left of the small blind posts the "big blind," equal to the amount of the minimum stake.

Pocket Cards: When the blinds’ part is over – the first cards are dealt. Every player gets two cards face down. These cards are pocket cards.

Bet Round 1: Betting starts with the player who is sitting immediately to the left of the big blind and goes clockwise around the table. Every player can fold, call or raise. Raising is possible by the lower table stake (5 bucks in a $5/$10 game) only. Betting is explained in more detail below.

The Flop Cards: Now three cards are dealt face up in the middle of the table. These cards are the flop cards. They make up the so called "community" cards which can be used by all the players to make up their hand.

Bet Round 2: Second round of betting follows. The thing goes like the first betting round.

The Turn Card: After the second round, a fourth "community" card is dealt face up. This card is the "Turn card". Then goes a third round of betting.

Bet Round 3: This round has just one exception from round one and two – the raising is possible only by the higher table stake ($10 in a $5/$10 game).

The River Card: Finally, a fifth and final "community" card is dealt. This cards has the name of the "River card", then goes the fourth and final round of betting.

Bet Round 4: This final betting round is carried out exactly as round number 3.

Showdown: The final betting round over. This is when the best five-card hand is determined.

Both the pocket cards and the community cards can be used to make up a hand. The player with the best five-card poker hand wins the pot.

Players can also split the pot if they have the same hand. In the rare case of the best hand consisting of community cards only, the pot is divided between all the players left in the pot at the showdown.

If you see that you are losing, and do not want to show your cards, you can Muck, that is to give up your hand and lose the pot. Otherwise you can Show to compare your hand with others

Start Again: After a hand is completed and the pot taken by the winner, the dealer button is moved one player to the left, and the next hand begins.

Betting System: The player left of the big blind starts the betting round, betting order goes around the table clockwise. Everyone is betting according to what they think their hand will lead to.

Fold: If you don’t like your cards, you can fold. If you have posted a blind, made a bet or raised a bet, you will lose that money. But you will not lose any more. After folding, you get out of the game until the next game round.

Check/Call: You can stay in the game by checking or calling. If no bet has been made before you, you can check without placing any money in the pot. If a bet has been made, you can call by placing the same amount in the pot.

Bet/Raise/Re-raise: If you think you hand is good enough, you can make a bet. If another player has already made a bet, you can raise it. Amounts are fixed by the table stakes. For example, in a $5/$10 table, bets are $5 in the first two rounds and $10 in the last two. There can be one bet and three raises in each round (bet, raise, re-raise, re-raise). After three raises the betting round is capped and the next card is dealt (or, if it is the final betting round, the best hand is determined).

All-in: When a player runs out of chips during the course of a hand, this player does not have need to fold. Instead the player can choose to be All-in - you call all your chips and the pot is divided into the main pot and side pot. All subsequent chips are hereafter added to the side pot. At the showdown if the "All-in" player does not have a winning hand, both the side pot and the main pot go to the winning hand, as usual.

At the showdown if the "All-in" player has a winning hand, the main pot goes to the "All-in" player, and the side pot goes to the next best hand. When several players go All-in, multiple side pots are created. The pots are divided according to hand and order in which the players went All-in. If a player not all in at the showdown has the winning hand he wins all side pots and the main pot. If an all in player has the strongest hand he/she wins the pot or pots that were collected until he/she went All-in. Any all in player with a winning hand can only win the pot or pots they are involved in

A Betting round continues until all players have folded or called the third raise, or until a bet has been called by all players (except the one who placed the bet) with no raise taking place.

Button: A button is representing the person who will be serving as dealer. This position rotates throughout the game. The person who is in the button position at the moment acts last in the betting round (with the exception of during the pre-flop round).

Big Blind: There are two forced bets in the pre-flop stage of the game – they are called blinds. The big blind is the larger of these two blings. The big blind is put in by the person sitting second over from the button (clockwise). The amount of the blind is equal to the small bet, for example 2 bucks on a $2/$4 game.

Community Cards: The cards which are dealt face-up in the center of the table and are shared by all players.

Flop: The flops are the first three community cards in Omaha Poker.

Hole Cards: A card which is dealt facing down.

River: The final community card in Omaha Poker. It follows the three flop cards and the turn card.

Small Blind: This is the smaller of the two blinds (check Big Blind above). The small blind is put in by the person who sits immediately next to the button (in clockwise). The amount of the blind is equal to the half of the small bet, for example 1 buck on a $2/$4 game.

Turn: It is the fourth community card in Omaha Poker. It follows the three flop cards and precedes the river card.

Omaha Hi Poker rules are very close to Texas Hold’em Poker  rules with two exceptions:

Before beginning the game, the player sitting clockwise to the button puts in a small blind.

The four hole cards are then dealt. The player sitting clockwise of the big blind begins the betting. At this point, the "flop" card, which is also the first community card, is placed on the table. After the flop round over, the "turn" card is dealt.

The player sitting clockwise to the button begins the next round, where betting is now made in the amount of the high bet (for example, 10 bucks in a $5/$10 game).

At this stage of the game, the "river" card is placed on the table. The player sitting clockwise to the button begins this next round.

After final betting round is over – the time comes to show your cards. The last player to have bet or raised must show their cards first. If no bets were made on this last round, then the player sitting clockwise to the button shows the cards. The pot is won by the player holding the best hand made up of five cards.

When you play tight it means you play a small percentage of the hands you dealt, loose means you are playing the more hands you’ll play.

Aggressiveness means that you tend to bet raise frequently in the hands you play, and on the contrary - the less you do so, the more passive your game style is.

Though it is considered that most of the winning players play tight aggressive, still this does not mean that other styles can not be played in a winning form.

Five-card stud originated from what we know as a typical stud poker game. This game is very similar to 7 Card Stud Poker, that is why its rules are basically the same(the diffrence is that up to 10 players can participate).

Still, there are some nuances in the game. Only one card is dealt face down to each player. In the game there are the 2nd, 3rd and 4th streets and the River. The example below will help to understand the rules better.

The game started. Each player begins with two cards, one facing up and one facing down.

The one who is sitting to the left of the dealer begins. If the game is with a bring-in, the bring-in is done by the person with the lowest face-up card. Bring-in is different from an ante because it only requires one person and because it counts as a bet for the opening round. If the game is without a bring-in, then the game starts with a check made by the person holding the highest face-up card. In case of a tie in ranking between two face-up cards, the person sitting closest (clockwise) to the dealer should go on.

After the first round is over, players get another face up card. A player with the highest ranking hand (with two face-up cards) places their bet first. A person who goes first has an option to choose between betting up to the limit or checking.

The same procedure continues for the third and fourth betting rounds, until showdown. It is quite possible that the game ends before reaching showdown, because no further calls will be made.
